What's the purpose of ILS?
Independent Living Services (ILS) helps adults with developmental disabilities learn and strengthen the practical skills they need to live as independently as possible.
ILS may help with:
- Cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping
- Budgeting and paying bills
- Using transportation and accessing the community
- Scheduling and attending appointments
- Understanding benefits and completing paperwork
- Personal health, safety, and self-care
- Building social and communication skills
- Finding housing or maintaining a home
- Making choices, solving problems, and advocating for oneself
The goal is not to do everything for the person. It is to provide personalized instruction, coaching, and support so the person can build confidence, make their own choices, and become more independent over time.
What we do?
As an Independent Living Services (ILS) agency, we will provide individualized training and support to adults with developmental disabilities so they can become more independent at home and in their communities.
We will:
- Assess each client’s strengths, needs, preferences, and goals.
- Develop an individualized service plan based on the client’s IPP.
- Teach practical skills such as cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, budgeting, and personal care.
- Help clients understand benefits, complete paperwork, and manage appointments.
- Teach transportation, community safety, and how to access local resources.
- Support clients with housing searches and maintaining a safe home.
- Build communication, decision-making, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills.
- Coordinate with families, service coordinators, and other providers—with the client’s permission.
- Track progress, document services, and adjust instruction as the client’s needs change.
- Encourage clients to practice skills independently and gradually reduce support when appropriate.
Our role is to teach, coach, model, and support—not to take over tasks that clients can learn to do themselves. The goal is to help each client exercise greater choice, confidence, and independence.
